Mixes

Mixes

A mix is a bounce of the song, usually from the mixing engineer or producer, sent to the band to listen to and comment on. After the feedback a new mix follows, and the loop repeats, so mixes are numbered: v1, v2, v3.

Where they are

Every mix has a page of its own, made for listening and giving feedback: the version and name, the player and waveform, the notes from the mix, the comments on it, download and share, with the other versions listed to switch between. A share link or a notification about a mix opens that page. The song page's player has a Mixes view listing the song's mixes, newest first; each opens its page, and Upload Mix there (or in the Uploads menu) adds the next version and opens it.

On the project page, a song at the Mixing or Finished stage plays its newest mix from its tile and in the playlist, and one at the Arranging stage plays its stems mixed down; the player says "Mix v4" or "Stems mix" so you know what you hear, and the tile names the stage and counts the mixes.

Listening

The chosen mix has a play button, the time, a volume slider and its waveform. Click the waveform to jump there. The Comments row under it marks every comment left at a spot in the mix; click a marker to read it.

Commenting on a mix

Comments on a mix stay with the mix: they do not appear in the song's Comments panel or on the stems' Comments row, and the song's own comments do not appear here.

  • At a spot: hold ⌘ (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows), or right-click, on the mix's waveform or its Comments row, and choose Comment here. The position is filled in.
  • About the mix in general: press Comment beside the transport.

Anyone who can comment on the song can comment on its mixes. Your own comments can be edited and deleted; owners and admins can delete anyone's.

Notes from the mix

Under the waveform, Notes from the mix is where the engineer says what changed and what to listen for. Editors write them with Add notes or Edit notes; a little markdown works (lists, bold).

Uploading, naming, removing

Editors upload with Upload Mix in the song page's Mixes view or its Uploads menu, or with the upload button on a mix's page. Any audio a DAW exports works (WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3, M4A and more, up to the stem size limit); the mix is named after its file and can be renamed from its menu. The menu also downloads the file (or its MP3), shares the mix by email, and removes it, comments and all. A song keeps up to 24 mixes.

Sharing a mix

Share on a mix's page sends a link that opens that mix's page. For a private song the link is a viewing link made for the recipient, as the song's own share is.

Hearing about mixes

A new mix reaches everyone on the project in their inbox, and a comment on a mix tells everyone which mix it is about; both links open the mix's page. Email follows the demos setting (Settings → Notifications).
